If I tell her to be quiet she is always compliant, but she also stops playing. I have been working on teaching her that she can keep playing even though I've told her to be quiet - so far she is having a hard time separating the two, she thinks part of play is barking so if she has to be quiet she thinks she has to stop playing too.

I have been praising and encouraging any time she is between barks and just playing quietly for a second. Then I tell her to be quiet as soon as she starts barking, but this generally results in her taking a pause from her play.

If I can't fix this it's certainly not the end of the world. Just wondered if anyone has some creative suggestions for getting her to realize it is actually possible to play quietly!

Teach whatever command you use for quiet so she knows it well. Does she fetch? With patience, you can use play fetch and quiet together until the penny finally drops and she gets what you are asking for.

You can command her to both fetch and to be quiet, which you can not do with "play with the dog", since that isn't a command. Although, maybe play on command could be taught?

I don't know how though. This is one for a lot of patience and a lot of persistence. Eventually, she'll get it that play stops immediately when she barks and she gets sent back in as soon as she is quiet.

She barks to me and she barked to her old doggy pal his whole life. These were barks of sheer joy. Although he hardly ever barked back; I know that it never annoyed him. He had no trouble snarling at her when she grabbed him too hard.

She'll also bark to strange dogs she sees at a distance; she seems to be telling them that they're welcome only if their intentions are good.

I don't think you have a problem. I am curious about one thing. Does your dog grab you and other dogs in play? Mine always does. Originally Posted by convextech.
